Nineteenth Century Cottage Renovation

Lindsey Shaw bought her 19th century cottage in January 2003. After spending some time searching for the perfect home she discovered this property in Cheshire near the Peak District, and although it needed considerable renovation she realised that it was a great opportunity to create a home exactly as she wanted.

Before the rennovation

The cottage needed a complete overhaul, including replacing all ceilings and floors and re-plastering the walls. Lindsey took on most of the work herself with help from friends and family, and only called on the professionals to help with structural work, electrics and plumbing. All the rooms were completely gutted with the only things remaining were two Victorian fireplaces.

Lindsey wanted to keep the cottagey aspect but to update it with a contemporary twist. She had plenty of ideas for all the rooms and found lots of inspiration from magazines and television programmes. All the rooms have an individual design but blend together to create a lovely comfortable home.

Master Bedroom

She has even improved the outside of the house by filling it with plants and flowerpots, and has received lots of comments from neighbours about how much she has improved it. Her next-door neighbour is extremely pleased, as she has run pretty flowerpots along the front of his house too.

The renovation took 5 months from start to finish, and although it has been a lot of hard work Lindsey has her home exactly the way she wants it. She says she wouldn't want to take on such a large project again, but she loves interior design and would happily take on smaller projects, but now she's very happy with her country cottage.
