DIY tips
- Before you start a job, make a list of all the tools and equipment you will need, don't forget about safety equipment too.
- Measure everything twice, if you are measuring an alcove take measurements from the front and back as they won't necessarily be the same, wall are invariably crooked and not at right angles.
- Before drilling into walls check that there are no wires of pipes behind, you can buy a device to check this.
- Use a mitre block for cutting on straight angles.
- To avoid drips with gloss paint, you can get a small sponge roller which will roll the paint on smoothly, this is also good if you are painting over tiles.
- Always sandpaper over gloss painted woodwork before putting on a new coat to stop the new paint chipping off when it's dry.
- Use a coloured tile grout to match coloured tiles, or pick a contrasting colour for an individual look.
- Always use a spirit level when putting up shelves, sounds simple but is very important.
- For instant frosted windows use a special adhesive film, perfect for bathrooms or areas where you want a bit of privacy but don't fancy blinds or curtains.
- When investing in power tools, try to buy cordless versions, they are much easier to use as you don't have to struggle with long cables, you can buy additional batteries so you always have one fully charged too.
